The static-sounding first 10 seconds of Tunng’s “The Village” made me initially think there was something wrong with my speakers. Though once the guitar and drums enter, it changes pitch and I realized that the sound is actually part of the song that helps build up to each verse. From their upcoming album, Turbines, this song is a unique mix of electronica and folk rock and the two sides play off each other quite nicely. Combined with the two vocalists – one male and one female – and lyrics such as “we took the secret and turned it backwards. Left it behind on fire,” it’s a quite appealing song that surprised me from its unexpected beginning.
